Roles Within Weddings Explained: Best Man Duties

Have you been asked to be the best man? Are you wondering what may be expected
of you? Well look no further here is a blog all about duties which could be asked
of you. Reminder: being the best man is a role that has lots of important
responsibilities however first and foremost remember that it is such a great
honour to be asked as it means you are the most significant man in the groom’s
life! You don’t want to let anyone down so follow these pointers and you will be
on your way to being the best, best man you can be!
Choosing Suits

Best man duties start soon after being asked, your help in planning is crucial and
as you’re the groom’s right-hand man you will be expected to help with the
choice of the suits. Normally you will be told the colour scheme in advance so
matching a tie/cravat or handkerchief to the colour scheme would be a great
idea. Plan to gather all measurements for the groomsmen and groom as it is very
helpful to have this info to hand whilst suit shopping. Your opinion on styles and
colours will be needed so maybe have a look online to brush up on what types of
suits you could all wear.

Stag Do

Organising the stag do is a top job for the best man. You know the groom the best
so will know what style of stag do he would prefer. Some ideas can be an obstacle
course, wine or whisky tasting or even a party bus! Whatever it boils down to
make sure the other groomsmen give you a hand and you don’t forget to invite
key family members from both the bride and groom’s side.

On the Wedding Day

There is normally a schedule to follow on the big day so make sure you keep an
eye on timings and get the groom and the groomsmen to the wedding on time!
Keeping your cool is your prerogative as you may need to settle any last-minute
wobbles or give some emotional support if the groom’s nerves start kicking in.
You probably will be asked to keep hold of the all-important rings so make sure
you have them at all times before the ceremony. You will be a witness to the
wedding along with the maid of honour so make sure you’re ready to sign the
wedding register after the vows.

The wedding breakfast will be fast approaching and this means your speech will
be soon. Take your time when reading it out and hopefully your pre-prepared
speech (which you have hopefully rehearsed for weeks!?) will be the funny,
heartfelt highlight of the meal and have everyone talking about what a great best
man you are. (Helpful hint: Check out our previous wedding speeches blog for
the content which you should add to your speech to make it stand out from the
crowd!)

Last but by no means least it is your duty to make sure the groom has a hitch-free
day with hardly (or hopefully no) stress, you can do this by closely watching
timings, being the life and soul of the day and squashing any woes that may arise.
It is important to always be available to the groom and show support when you
can. It is an important role to fill but hopefully, by following these tips you will be
the best you can be!
